The Works Progress Administration (WPA) later provided funding to build a road to the lodge, making the area more accessible.
Expansion and Growth
By the 1940s, the Snow Bowl had gained popularity, attracting visitors from across the country. In 1947, over 10,000 people visited the ski area in a single weekend, with license plates spotted from as far away as Florida, Texas, and Washington. The town of Camden recognized the importance of the Snow Bowl and allocated funds to provide free skiing access to local students.
During the 1960s, federal funding allowed for significant expansion, including the addition of new trails, a lift line, power transmission, and snowmaking equipment. A Hall T-Bar lift was installed in 1967, further enhancing the ski experience.
Challenges and Revitalization
The Snow Bowl faced challenges in the 1970s, including the destruction of its original lodge due to a fire. A new lodge was built closer to the ski trails, and by 1976, the ski lifts became fully operational. However, economic difficulties and inconsistent snowfall led to periods of decline.
In the 2000s, efforts were made to revitalize the Snow Bowl. In 2014, a major redevelopment project began, funded by community donations and grants. The project included the installation of new lifts, LED lighting for night skiing, and improved snowmaking capabilities. By 2015, the Snow Bowl had undergone a transformation, making it a more modern and sustainable ski area.
The U.S. National Toboggan Championships
One of the Snow Bowl’s most famous events is the U.S. National Toboggan Championships, held annually since 1991. The event takes place on the Jack Williams Toboggan Chute, a 400-foot-long ice-covered track that sends sleds onto frozen Hosmer Pond. Toboggans can reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour, making it a thrilling competition.
