A Town of Four Nations
Few places in New England have experienced as much territorial conflict as Castine. The town was occupied at various times by the French, Dutch, English, and Americans. The French built Fort Pentagouet in the 1630s, solidifying their control over the region. However, the Dutch briefly seized Castine in 1674 and 1676, destroying the fort before the British took control in 1713.
The Penobscot Expedition and British Occupation
During the American Revolution, Castine became a strategic location for the British. In 1779, the Penobscot Expedition, a joint naval and military effort by colonial forces, attempted to reclaim Castine from British control. However, poor coordination and leadership led to a disastrous defeat, marking one of the worst naval losses in American history.
The British returned during the War of 1812, occupying Castine without resistance in 1814. They collected customs duties during their stay and took the money with them upon departure.
Maritime Prosperity and Economic Growth
Following the War of 1812, Castine entered a period of great prosperity. The town became a center for shipbuilding, fishing, and trade, with hundreds of vessels passing through its harbor. By 1850, Castine had the second highest per capita wealth of any town in the United States. The wealth generated from maritime industries is still reflected in the town’s Federal and Greek Revival-style homes.
Education and Cultural Influence
Castine is home to the Maine Maritime Academy, founded in 1941, which trains officers and engineers for the United States Merchant Marine. The academy continues to be a vital institution, shaping the town’s identity and economy.
