Industrial Growth and Manufacturing Legacy
By the mid-19th century, Pittsfield had developed into a small mill town. The arrival of the Penobscot and Kennebec Railroad in 1855 further boosted economic development.
The town became home to several woolen mills, including the Riverside Woolen Company, which was the first in Maine to sell cloth directly from the loom to the wearer. The Waverly Woolen Mill, built in 1891-1892, provided housing for workers and contributed to Pittsfield’s industrial expansion.
Pittsfield also had woodworking plants and a canning factory, supporting its growing economy. However, the textile industry faced challenges during the Great Depression, leading to the closure of several mills.
