The first ski trails on Pleasant Mountain were developed in 1935 by local community groups, including the Bridgton Lions Club, Bridgton Chamber of Commerce, and Bridgton Academy. With assistance from the Works Progress Administration, the town added a rope tow, which officially opened to the public on January 23, 1938.

Pleasant Mountain quickly became a popular ski destination, attracting skiers from across New England. The Pleasant Mountain Ski Club was formed, and the resort expanded its offerings, including ski jumps and cross-country trails.

Growth and Expansion in the Mid-20th Century

Following World War II, Pleasant Mountain saw significant growth. The resort added new trails, lifts, and facilities, solidifying its reputation as a premier ski area. By the 1950s, Pleasant Mountain was known for its family-friendly atmosphere and well-maintained slopes.

In 1988, the resort was purchased by the Shawnee Mountain Corporation, which renamed it Shawnee Peak to align with its Pennsylvania-based ski area. Despite the name change, the resort continued to thrive, offering night skiing and expanded terrain.

Return to Its Roots: Pleasant Mountain’s Rebranding

In 2022, the resort returned to its original name, Pleasant Mountain, honoring its 84-year history and deep connection to the local community. The decision was made to reflect the mountain’s heritage and restore its identity as Maine’s oldest ski area.

Today, Pleasant Mountain remains a beloved ski destination, offering terrain for all ability levels, modern lifts, and extensive night skiing.

Pleasant Mountain Today: A Blend of Tradition and Innovation

Pleasant Mountain continues to evolve, balancing its historic charm with modern amenities. The resort features four chairlifts, two surface lifts, and 245 skiable acres, making it a favorite among skiers and snowboarders.

From its humble beginnings in 1938 to its resurgence as Pleasant Mountain, the resort stands as a testament to Maine’s skiing legacy and the enduring spirit of winter sports enthusiasts.
